The Cabinet has approved the launch of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project, which will receive funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister indicated that the GEF is the largest multilateral trust fund aimed at helping developing nations invest in nature and supports the enforcement of major international environmental agreements concerning biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.
Fiji has obtained this initiative to reassess its key biodiversity focus areas as outlined in Fiji’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2020 – 2025, ensuring alignment with the new biodiversity targets established by the Global Biodiversity Framework.
The project will implement a comprehensive approach involving collaboration across society and government, including an Inter-Ministerial NBSAP dialogue and consultations with essential stakeholders such as government partners, civil society, non-governmental organizations, regional groups, resource owners, and academic institutions.
The project is expected to be completed by February 28, 2025.
