Fiji Takes Bold Steps Towards Women’s Maritime Security

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration is engaging in consultations regarding Fiji’s inaugural Women Peace and Security National Action Plan, as stated by British High Commissioner to Fiji, Dr. Brian Jones. During the Maritime Security Committee Conference held recently, Dr. Jones highlighted that this plan aims to create a secure and equitable maritime environment for everyone.

He noted that British naval ships, including offshore patrol vessels that have been active in the region, are now equipped with distinct quarters for both female and male officers. Dr. Jones remarked that this development will foster a safer and more accommodating atmosphere not only for military personnel but also for civilians who may find themselves in these typically unfamiliar environments.

Additionally, Munkhtuya Altangerel, the UNDP resident representative for the Pacific office, underlined the crucial role of the ocean. She described it as the “lifeblood” of communities, emphasizing that it serves not merely as a geographical feature but as a cornerstone of Pacific identity. Altangerel stressed the significance of utilizing local knowledge, which can greatly enhance community efforts in maritime security.

The two-day conference aims to promote collaboration and explore ways to safeguard maritime areas for the benefit of future generations.
