The Cabinet has approved the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) Early Action Support Project, which will receive funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the GEF is the largest multilateral trust fund dedicated to assisting developing countries in investing in nature. It also supports the implementation of significant international environmental agreements related to biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.
Fiji has obtained this project to assess its main biodiversity focus areas in accordance with the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2020 – 2025, and to align it with the new biodiversity targets set by the Global Biodiversity Framework.
The initiative will take a comprehensive approach involving the entire society and government through dialogues under an Inter-Ministerial NBSAP framework, along with consultations with essential stakeholders, including government partners, civil society, non-governmental organizations, regional bodies, resource owners, and academic institutions.
The project is expected to be completed by February 28, 2025.
