Fiji Takes Bold Steps Against Pornography: A United Front for Child Protection

A National Taskforce aimed at tackling the issue of pornography in Fiji recently held its inaugural meeting, chaired by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica alongside Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya.

Established by the Cabinet earlier this year, the Taskforce has brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, including government, private organizations, civil societies, and faith-based groups, to address the rising prevalence of pornographic content and its societal ramifications, as well as the critical issue of online child sexual exploitation and abuse.

During the meeting, Tabuya emphasized the necessity of a united effort in combating online exploitation and described the gathering as a significant step toward protecting children from the perils of online pornography.

Mereseini Rakuita, Principal Strategic Lead for Pacific Women and Girls at SPC, stated that the Taskforce is vital, highlighting the roles of the government, regulatory bodies, policies, and commitments in addressing pornography in Fiji and potentially throughout the Pacific region.

Globally, the adult entertainment industry generates nearly $97 billion in annual revenue. Fiji ranks among the top ten countries with the highest frequency of internet searches for pornography. An unnamed internet service provider disclosed that approximately 626.13 terabytes of internet traffic were allocated to viewing pornographic content in Fiji during the third quarter of 2023, a volume equivalent to data stored in 100 million books.

The NTAP Fiji meeting united stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to develop comprehensive strategies aimed at mitigating the effects of pornography and illegal content, especially in terms of safeguarding children in the digital world. The Taskforce will also explore effective methods to promote responsible use of social media and the internet.

Through collaborative efforts, this Taskforce aims to implement a nationwide strategy that prioritizes the well-being of all Fijians and fosters a healthier societal environment.
