The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has praised the groundbreaking initiative of the green hydrogen shipment from New Zealand to Fiji. This initiative is accompanied by the introduction of an advanced hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas terminal in Lautoka.
FCCC Chief Executive Officer Joel Abraham highlighted that the project, which is a collaboration among Obayashi Corporation, Halcyon Power, Fiji Gas, and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ), showcases the power of global partnerships in driving transformative solutions that harmonize economic growth with environmental responsibility.
Abraham emphasized that this initiative represents a significant advancement in sustainable energy options for Fiji and the wider Pacific region, addressing the urgent challenges of climate change and supporting Fiji’s commitments under the Paris Agreement. He expressed pride in Fiji’s leadership in setting regional benchmarks for sustainability.
The pilot project incorporates a green supply chain that utilizes geothermal power from New Zealand—an environmentally friendly and carbon-neutral source—to produce ‘green’ hydrogen. This hydrogen is then shipped to Fiji, where it is used to operate a dual-fuel generator at the Lautoka Terminal. This innovative generator can use both hydrogen and diesel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions while producing cleaner and more efficient energy.
By diversifying fuel sources, this hydrogen technology enhances energy security and reduces dependence on imported fuels, thereby saving costs and promoting independent energy initiatives amid rising global energy market volatility.
Abraham extended his appreciation to the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their support, noting that their leadership fosters hope for a cleaner and greener future for Fiji and the Pacific region. He reiterated the FCCC’s commitment to promoting innovation in green energy and invited other stakeholders to collaborate on initiatives addressing critical issues such as climate change, energy security, and economic development.
In conclusion, Abraham stated, “By embracing advanced technologies, Fiji is paving the way for a sustainable future where progress and ecological balance coexist.”
This pioneering project not only represents a step forward for Fiji in sustainable energy but also serves as an inspiration for other nations as they seek to combat climate change and enhance energy independence.
Summary: The FCCC has applauded a collaborative project involving the shipment of green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, featuring a new dual-fuel generator. This initiative aims to promote sustainable energy solutions, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance energy security for Fiji, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in addressing climate challenges.
