The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has praised the groundbreaking initiative to transport green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji and the introduction of a unique hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal. According to FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham, this project, a collaboration between Obayashi Corporation, Halcyon Power, and Fiji Gas, with the backing of Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, exemplifies how international partnerships can foster transformative solutions that promote economic growth while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
Abraham described the initiative as a significant advancement for sustainable energy in Fiji and the wider Pacific region, aimed at combating climate change and fulfilling Fiji’s commitments under the Paris Agreement. He expressed pride in Fiji setting a benchmark for sustainability in the region, highlighting the importance of innovation and collaboration in achieving energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The project implements a sustainable green supply chain by harnessing geothermal energy from New Zealand – a renewable and carbon-neutral source – to create green hydrogen, which is then transported to Fiji. Once at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is safely deployed for use in a dual-fuel generator that can operate on both hydrogen and diesel, thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and producing cleaner energy. This diversification of fuel sources enhances energy security and promotes Fiji’s independence amidst fluctuating global energy market conditions.
Abraham thanked the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their support, emphasizing their roles in fostering a cleaner and more sustainable future for Fiji and the Pacific. He also expressed his eagerness to promote further innovations in green energy, inviting other stakeholders to collaborate on initiatives tackling climate change, energy security, and economic development.
