The Cabinet has approved the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project, backed by funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the GEF is the largest multilateral trust fund dedicated to enabling developing nations to invest in environmental initiatives. It also supports the implementation of key international environmental agreements related to biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.
Fiji has initiated this project to review its key biodiversity areas as outlined in Fiji’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2020 – 2025, aligning them with the new biodiversity targets set by the Global Biodiversity Framework.
The project will employ a collaborative approach, engaging various sectors of society and government through an Inter-Ministerial NBSAP dialogue. It will involve consultations with essential stakeholders, including government representatives, civil society organizations, NGOs, regional groups, resource owners, and academic institutions.
This initiative is expected to be completed by February 28, 2025.
