Fiji Takes Bold Step in Global Biodiversity Commitment

The Cabinet has given the green light for the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project, which will be funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the GEF is the largest multilateral trust fund aimed at helping developing nations invest in environmental initiatives. It supports the implementation of various significant international environmental agreements, including those related to biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.

Fiji will utilize this project to reassess its key biodiversity focus areas in accordance with the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2020 – 2025, aligning it with the updated biodiversity targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The approach will involve comprehensive participation from society and the government, facilitated through an Inter-Ministerial NBSAP dialogue and consultations with important stakeholders, including government bodies, civil societies, non-governmental organizations, regional agencies, resource owners, and academic institutions.

The project is expected to be completed by February 28, 2025.
