The government has approved the expansion of a termite baiting initiative aimed at combatting the invasive Asian Subterranean Termite (AST) issue affecting various regions in Fiji. The World Bank has pledged financial support to target homes with annual incomes below $30,000, particularly in the Western and Northern Divisions, including vulnerable populations in squatter settlements in high-risk areas.
The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji will be responsible for overseeing and monitoring the deployment of this baiting program. This initiative is part of a broader, comprehensive strategy to tackle the widespread termite infestation that has negatively impacted many communities, especially in urban areas such as Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, and Labasa, where damage has been significant over the last 15 years.
The Office of the Prime Minister will lead this effort in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Biosecurity Authority to ensure effective implementation and success of the program. Other strategies are also being developed for future consideration to further fight against these pests.
