The Ministry of Trade in Fiji is taking steps to combat the increasing problem of online scams through legislative changes. Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica announced during a parliamentary session that efforts are underway to formalize anti-scam measures by the authorities.
Kamikamica emphasized that the review process will be aligned with international best practices to ensure that the laws are both current and effective in tackling the changing landscape of scams. He noted that a consultant will be appointed to provide important recommendations for necessary changes, aiming to update the legal framework to meet global standards and enhance protection for citizens.
He highlighted the inadequacy of existing laws, explaining that if a scam is recognized and widely acknowledged, without a police complaint, there is little that can be done. The Minister expressed hope for legislative changes that would empower entities like the Reserve Bank to intervene when a potential scam is identified, thereby reducing the impact of scams on the public.
In addition, Kamikamica mentioned that the ministry is also working on developing the National Cybersecurity Strategy.
