The Cabinet has taken significant steps towards establishing a medicinal cannabis industry in Fiji by approving the drafting of relevant legislation during its recent meeting. This initiative follows the completion of a feasibility study on the Nutraceutical and Medicinal Cannabis Industries in Fiji, conducted with assistance from the Australian Government, Market Development Facility, and PharmOut.

The feasibility study assessed various factors, including economic viability, market conditions, compliance with existing laws and regulations, as well as case studies from other regions. It also analyzed operational and financial aspects, covering logistics, legislative frameworks, and the overall investment climate in Fiji. The report outlines potential benefits and socio-economic impacts while identifying risks, including those related to illicit use and reputational concerns.

The drafting process for the Medicinal Cannabis legislation will be carried out in consultation with the Office of the Solicitor-General and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, ensuring that all necessary legal and health guidelines are taken into account.

This development provides a hopeful outlook for the establishment of a regulated medicinal cannabis industry in Fiji, which could bring about various economic benefits, enhance healthcare options, and position Fiji as a player in the global market for medicinal cannabis.

Summary: The Fijian Cabinet has approved the drafting of medicinal cannabis legislation and a feasibility study, aiming to develop a legal and economically viable medicinal cannabis industry in the country. This initiative is expected to yield positive socio-economic benefits while addressing potential risks.
