Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant challenge to global health, particularly within Fiji, where efforts to combat this issue are gaining momentum. The National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been actively promoting World AMR Awareness Week since its inception in 2015. This year, the awareness week commenced on November 18 and will continue until November 24.
The theme of this week emphasizes the importance of raising awareness regarding AMR, advocating for proper hygiene practices, and highlighting the value of vaccination—insights particularly relevant after the COVID-19 pandemic. During the launch of AMR Week in Labasa, Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor for the Health Ministry, underscored the vital need to address AMR, indicating that it not only jeopardizes advancements in modern medicine but also poses a direct threat to lives today.
Dr. Cikamatana pointed to Fiji’s proactive stance in addressing AMR with the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second iteration. This strategic plan delineates critical objectives while promoting collaboration across various health sectors.
Furthermore, she urged the public to adhere to the guidance of healthcare professionals regarding antibiotic use, avoid sharing prescriptions, and refrain from unnecessarily requesting antibiotics. Dr. Cikamatana called for a united effort across all sectors—human, animal, and environmental health—to tackle AMR and safeguard both local and global well-being.
Fiji’s commitment to education, advocacy, and collective action represents a hopeful step towards a healthier future for everyone. By fostering awareness and promoting responsible antibiotic use, the community can work together to mitigate the threats posed by AMR, ensuring a safer environment for present and future generations.
In summary, the observance of World AMR Awareness Week serves as a crucial reminder of the urgent need to address antimicrobial resistance, with Fiji taking meaningful steps through education and strategic planning to combat this global health threat.
