Fiji Takes a Stand: Protecting Children from Sugarcane Labor

Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Agni Deo Singh has stated that children under the age of 18 should not be involved in the cutting and loading of sugarcane. He made this declaration during the opening of a workshop on Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) organized by the Fairtrade Network of Asia and Pacific Producers (NAPP) in Lautoka.

Minister Singh emphasized that everyone in Fiji deserves a work environment free from exploitation, discrimination, and abuse. The issue of child engagement in the sugar industry has gained significant attention, and the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that no child is subjected to hazardous work.

He expressed gratitude towards various organizations, including the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Sugar Cane Growers Council, for collaborating with the government to provide training and awareness initiatives aimed at eliminating child labor in the sugar sector.

According to employment laws, children should not be engaged in any hazardous work that could compromise their health, safety, and well-being. Singh highlighted the importance of protecting children from exposure to harmful substances like chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and weedicides. He stressed that ensuring the safety and well-being of children is a priority, as any adverse effects may not be immediately visible but could have long-term health consequences.
