Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing global health concern, and efforts to combat it are being actively reinforced in the country. Since 2015, the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been organizing World AMR Awareness Week. This year’s observance started on November 18 and will continue through November 24.
The campaign underscores the importance of awareness, proper hygiene practices, and vaccinations, drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic. During the launch in Labasa, Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor of the Health Ministry, stressed that AMR poses a risk not only to the advancements of modern medicine but also to lives today.
Dr. Cikamatana highlighted Fiji’s proactive stance through the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, now in its second iteration. The plan sets forth key objectives and encourages collaboration among various health sectors.
She urged the public to heed healthcare professionals’ guidance regarding antibiotic use, avoid sharing prescriptions, and refrain from requesting antibiotics unnecessarily. The call for collective action spans human, animal, and environmental health, recognizing that fighting AMR requires a unified approach to safeguard local and global health.
Through education, advocacy, and decisive action, Fiji has the potential to contribute to a healthier future for everyone.
In summary, the annual World AMR Awareness Week serves as a critical reminder of the dangers posed by antimicrobial resistance and the collective responsibility we share in addressing this urgent health issue. With proactive measures and community support, there is hope for a significant impact in the fight against AMR.
