The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has praised the groundbreaking initiative of green hydrogen shipments from New Zealand to Fiji, coinciding with the introduction of an innovative hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal.

Joel Abraham, the CEO of FCCC, highlighted that this project, spearheaded by Obayashi Corporation and Halcyon Power in collaboration with Fiji Gas and supported by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, exemplifies the power of global partnerships to foster transformative solutions that balance economic progress with environmental responsibility.

“This project represents a significant advancement for sustainable energy solutions in Fiji and the broader Pacific region, addressing critical challenges posed by climate change and supporting Fiji’s commitments under the Paris Agreement,” stated Abraham.

He emphasized FCCC’s ongoing commitment to promoting sustainability through the adoption and innovation of renewable energy. Abraham expressed pride in seeing Fiji take the lead in establishing regional standards for sustainability.

The pilot project utilizes geothermal energy from New Zealand—a renewable and carbon-neutral resource—to generate ‘green’ hydrogen, which is subsequently transported to Fiji. Once at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is introduced to operate a dual-fuel generator that can utilize both hydrogen and diesel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions while producing more efficient energy.

This initiative is pivotal in diversifying fuel sources and enhancing energy security. The dual-fuel system reduces reliance on imported fuels, thereby saving costs and promoting Fiji’s energy independence amid growing instability in global energy markets.

Abraham also acknowledged the integral support from the governments of Japan and New Zealand. He expressed gratitude, stating, “We are deeply thankful to the Government of Japan for its visionary support and to the New Zealand Government for its crucial role in producing and supplying green hydrogen. Your leadership ignites hope for a cleaner and greener future for Fiji and the Pacific region.”

FCCC is eager to continue fostering sustainable development in the Pacific by supporting and advancing further green energy innovations. They encourage other stakeholders to draw inspiration from this initiative and collaborate on projects that tackle pressing issues such as climate change, energy security, and economic development.

“By adopting innovative technologies, Fiji is setting a precedent for a sustainable future where progress and environmental care coexist,” Abraham concluded.

This initiative is a hopeful step towards a more sustainable energy future, demonstrating how international collaboration and innovation can lead to significant environmental benefits while bolstering national energy security. The efforts made by Fiji not only benefit the nation but also set an inspiring example for other countries in the Pacific and beyond.
