The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has applauded the groundbreaking initiative of transporting green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, alongside the launch of a cutting-edge hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal.
FCCC Chief Executive Officer Joel Abraham highlighted that this project, spearheaded by Obayashi Corporation and Halcyon Power in collaboration with Fiji Gas and supported by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment (MOEJ), exemplifies how global partnerships can lead to transformative solutions that harmonize economic progress with environmental responsibility.
“This endeavor represents a significant milestone for sustainable energy solutions in Fiji and the Pacific, addressing climate change challenges and aiding Fiji in meeting its commitments under the Paris Agreement,” Abraham stated.
The FCCC is dedicated to promoting sustainability through advocacy for renewable energy adoption. Abraham expressed pride in Fiji’s leadership in establishing regional standards for sustainability. The project underscores the benefits of innovation and international cooperation, enhancing the country’s energy security while tackling climate change and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.
This pilot project features a green supply chain that employs geothermal energy from New Zealand—a renewable and carbon-neutral source—to generate ‘green’ hydrogen, which is then transported to Fiji. Upon arrival at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is carefully released and utilized to operate a dual-fuel generator that can run on both hydrogen and diesel. This dual-fuel capability significantly curtails greenhouse gas emissions while producing cleaner energy.
By diversifying energy sources, hydrogen technology not only boosts energy security but also reduces dependence on imported fuels, which can lead to cost savings and enhance Fiji’s energy independence amid fluctuating global energy markets.
Abraham extended gratitude to the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their invaluable support. He emphasized that their leadership fosters optimism for a cleaner, more sustainable future for Fiji and the Pacific region.
