Fiji Tackles Workforce Woes: A Path to Productivity Boost?

Fiji’s government has recognized significant shortcomings in workforce productivity and discipline, as outlined by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad. During the State of the Economy Breakfast Talanoa, Prasad highlighted an alarming trend where an employer anticipates a 40 percent absenteeism rate from his workforce each week, indicating a pressing issue of low productivity and lack of discipline in the labor force.

To address these challenges, Prasad reiterated the government’s commitment to minimizing bureaucratic hurdles and creating a more business-friendly atmosphere. He stated, “We will conduct a holistic review of bureaucratic processes across the economy to drive greater efficiency and ease of doing business.” This initiative aims to enhance labor productivity by fostering collaboration with various stakeholders.

Supporting this sentiment, Edward Bernard, Chief Executive of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation, emphasized the importance of increased productivity, noting, “If you’re not having increased productivity, then of course there’s an increase in the cost of doing business.” He expressed hope that with a shared commitment to improving workplace efficiency and discipline, Fiji’s economy could see significant benefits.

These recent discussions echo sentiments expressed by Maritino Nemani, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Work Relations, who advocated for a conducive environment for businesses, strong leadership, and the fostering of relationships among stakeholders. Such elements are deemed critical for creating a foundation for economic growth.

In summary, the government’s proactive measures and recognition of present challenges signal an optimistic path forward, where fostering a disciplined and productive workforce can potentially enhance Fiji’s economic landscape and contribute to greater prosperity for its citizens.
