Fiji Tackles Plastic Pollution: Major Legal Revisions Ahead!

The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Sivendra Michael, announced that the Fijian Government intends to review the Litters Act of 2008 and the Environmental Management Act to combat plastic pollution in the country. During the Fiji National Symposium on Plastic Pollution, Dr. Michael emphasized the introduction of container deposit legislation as a vital measure to minimize the irresponsible disposal of plastic bottles and containers.

He highlighted that the current Litters Act serves as the primary legislation but lacks specific follow-up regulations, indicating a need for further development in this area. Additionally, while the Environmental Management Act includes some regulations related to waste and pollution control, there remains potential for enhancement. Strengthening these regulations could involve the implementation of container deposit regulations, which would help manage the lifecycle of plastics in Fiji.
