The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is hosting a National Conference in Fiji focused on emerging criminal trends. The event commenced this morning at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island Resort and brings together approximately 150 participants, including prosecutors, defense attorneys, police officers, and investigators.

Evan Robbins, the Program Director of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs from the U.S. State Department, officially opened the conference, which will span two days. Participants will hear from both local and international keynote speakers addressing key issues such as narcotics, the age of criminal responsibility, international cooperation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and mental health under the theme “Fiji on the Cusp of Emerging Trends.”

Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Nancy Tikoisuva, noted the complexity of the theme but underscored its relevance to the current situation in Fiji. She highlighted the interconnectedness of the topics covered and emphasized the pressing nature of drug-related issues affecting families and communities throughout the nation.

Tikoisuva mentioned the growing concerns around cybersecurity, AI, and mental health, stressing the importance of collaboration. She stated that the fight against crime requires a collective effort involving strengthened partnerships between law enforcement, the private sector, and civil society.

This conference serves as a valuable platform for law enforcement stakeholders to engage in dialogue regarding emerging criminal issues and to learn from experienced speakers in their respective fields.

Overall, the initiative reflects a proactive approach to understanding and combating the evolving landscape of crime in Fiji, fostering a spirit of international cooperation and community engagement that can pave the way for a healthier, safer society.
