Fiji’s swimmers are ramping up their training as they approach selection for the Pacific Mini Games, with a recent mini meet held at the Damodar City National Aquatic Centre in Suva. This latest event, the third mini meet, saw participation from seven clubs across the country, with competitors aged 14 and older aiming to hit qualifying times for the upcoming final trials scheduled for April 11.
Esther Malani, head coach of the Orca Swimming Club, underscored the significance of this competition in aiding swimmers to reach their individual goals. “Swimmers are eager to accomplish the qualifying times for the Pacific Mini Games in Palau,” said Malani. Remarkably, several athletes, including Orca’s Imelda Smith, have already secured qualifying times in two events.
The selection process will culminate in a team of 16 swimmers, evenly split between eight males and eight females, including categories for both under-18 and over-18 athletes. The mini meet featured clubs such as Great White Sharks, Barracuda, Mako, and Seals from Nadi, alongside Suva’s Tritons, Orca, and Dolphin Club.
Despite interruptions from unpredictable weather, Malani expressed optimism: “The sun drains their energy, but the rain helps cool them down. It’s all part of the challenge.”
As athletes prepare for the significant trials next month, their unwavering commitment reflects a strong collective spirit within Fiji’s swimming community. The Pacific Mini Games, scheduled for June 29 to July 9 in Palau, not only offers a platform for individual success but also presents an opportunity for Fiji to enhance its regional sports prominence.
The enthusiasm observed at these meets indicates a bright future for swimming in Fiji, as these dedicated swimmers strive to make their mark on the international stage. Their determination to excel serves as an inspiring testament to the resilience and talent present in the nation’s athletic community.
