Fiji Suspends Inmate Funeral Attendance Amid Policy Review

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced a temporary halt on allowing inmates to attend the funerals of their close relatives. This decision is part of a broader review of operational policies and procedures, aiming to maintain the safety, security, and consistency of FCS services.

For several years, the FCS granted temporary releases to inmates for attending the funerals of immediate family members on a case-by-case basis as a humanitarian measure. However, the lack of a formal policy governing these releases has underlined the necessity for a thorough review.

Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, emphasized the importance of having clear and consistent guidelines to balance the emotional effects of bereavement on inmates with public safety and operational needs. The review will address the following areas:

– Establishing clear eligibility criteria for temporary releases on compassionate grounds.
– Ensuring the safety and security of both the public and inmates.
– Minimizing any operational disruptions caused by such releases.
– Engaging with key stakeholders to align the policy with best practices.

Dr. Nakarawa concluded that during the review period, no inmates will be permitted to attend funerals.
