The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) locomotive drivers are under scrutiny due to allegations of misconduct. Reports suggest that some drivers are consuming kava during work hours. This issue was raised by farmers from the Wainikoro Sector in Labasa, prompting a response from the Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh.
Mr. Singh expressed his disapproval of such behavior, stating that his ministry and the FSC will not accept the consumption of kava during working hours. Farmers have voiced concerns that this practice may lead to delays in train trips for sugarcane transportation.
The ministry is also investigating a tragic accident that took place in Lausa, Tavua, and Mr. Singh is awaiting feedback from the FSC regarding this incident. To enhance oversight of locomotive drivers, Mr. Singh has requested the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in locomotives. This initiative aims to track both the drivers and the locomotives to ensure timely delivery to farms, maximizing sugarcane carting for mill production.
