New Leadership in Fiji's Sugar Sector: Can Ram Revitalize the Industry?

Fiji Sugar Corporation Welcomes New Leadership Amidst Industry Challenges

Adrian Sunil Parshu Ram has been appointed to the board of directors for the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), with his official term starting on April 1, 2025. He takes over the role from Athil Narayan, who has served on the board for the past seven years. Nitya Reddy, Chairman of the FSC, praised Ram for his comprehensive legal background, which encompasses areas such as insurance, commercial law, labor relations, taxation, and finance. Reddy underscored the importance of Ram’s skills in litigation, mediation, and business management, especially as the sugar industry confronts unprecedented pressures.

Currently, the Fiji sugar sector is facing its most significant challenges in a century and a half, including a decline in cane production, inefficiencies in operations, aging infrastructure, and soaring costs. Reddy highlighted the pressing need for effective leadership to formulate robust legal strategies aimed at overcoming these hurdles.

Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, has publicly supported Ram’s appointment, expressing confidence that he will bolster initiatives focused on revitalizing the sugar industry in Fiji. Ram’s academic credentials—which include degrees in Law and Commerce from the University of Queensland and an MBA from the University of the South Pacific—further equip him to make valuable contributions to the FSC board.

In his new role, Ram is anticipated to adopt an innovative and proactive strategy, aligning with ongoing dialogues within the International Sugar Organization and working alongside global industry participants like Tate and Lyle. These partnerships signal a fresh wave of optimism for the recovery and sustainable growth of Fiji’s sugar industry, promising benefits for local farmers and the wider economy.

This transition in leadership reflects a commitment to sustainable practices and strategic governance in the sugar sector, offering a hopeful outlook for future development. With Ram’s expertise and the FSC’s determination to address significant challenges, there’s a strong belief that the corporation can rejuvenate the industry and enhance economic resilience in Fiji.
