The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) locomotive drivers are under scrutiny due to allegations of misconduct in the workplace. Reports suggest that some drivers have been consuming kava during their working hours. This issue was raised by farmers in the Wainikoro Sector of Labasa during a recent discussion with the Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh.
Mr. Singh expressed his disapproval of such behavior, stating that neither his ministry nor FSC would tolerate the consumption of kava while on the job. Farmers have reported that this kava consumption might have led to delays in train trips to Wainikoro for sugarcane transport.
In the wake of a fatal accident that took place in Lausa, Tavua on Wednesday, the ministry is conducting an investigation. Mr. Singh is awaiting feedback from FSC regarding the accident.
To enhance monitoring of locomotive drivers, Mr. Singh has requested the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices in the locomotives. This measure aims to track the locations of both drivers and locomotives at any given time. Mr. Singh emphasized the importance of timely deliveries to and from interior farms to maximize sugarcane collection for processing at the mill.
