A recent agreement between the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Youth with a Mission (YWAM) New Zealand enables volunteer healthcare professionals from New Zealand to assist Fijians, particularly in maritime and rural regions.
During a Parliament session last week, Minister for Health Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu announced that the Cabinet endorsed the 10-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) on August 4 and 7.
Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that the MOU facilitates cooperation between YWAM and the Ministry of Health, aiming to enhance service delivery and achieve universal health coverage for underserved populations in Fiji, especially those in remote areas. He noted that the medical teams arrive by ship to provide these services.
The primary healthcare services offered include health education, screenings, and dental care.
Looking ahead, Dr. Lalabalavu mentioned the need to streamline processes related to registration, procurement, and customs for the incoming teams. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration, which has continued since the previous government, highlighting its importance in providing primary healthcare services to maritime and island communities.
In response to a query regarding the possibility of waiving the temporary registration fees for healthcare professionals serving on the vessels, Dr. Lalabalavu indicated that the Ministry would consider this request. He pointed out that many of the visiting teams are recurrent, and the Ministry is open to exploring ways to support them in recognition of the valuable service they provide to Fijians.
