Fiji Strengthens Drug Detection with Cutting-Edge Technology

Officers from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services (FRCS) and various border agencies have been equipped with advanced drug detection tools aimed at enhancing drug discovery efforts within Fiji’s borders. This state-of-the-art equipment, including First Defenders and TruNarc devices, was generously provided by the Japanese government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

The new technology will allow officials to scan and test for narcotics, hazardous chemicals, and other substances in real time. This immediate analytical capability will significantly improve the efficiency of border operations, enabling FRCS and police to classify substances without lengthy delays for laboratory verification.

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting Fiji in strengthening its border security. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in protecting Fiji’s extensive maritime zones and addressing related security concerns.

Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, referenced a recent international drug bust in Spain involving packages marked with ‘Fiji.’ He stated that authorities are investigating the origins of these drugs. Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized a clear message to potential drug traffickers: “Do not attempt to import drugs to Fiji, as we are better equipped to detect and apprehend offenders.”

This initiative not only boosts the capabilities of Fiji’s border officials but also strengthens the country’s fight against drug trafficking, enhancing safety and security for all citizens.
