Fiji Strengthens Disaster Response with WHO Support

In the last twenty years, Fiji has experienced the devastating effects of 23 cyclones, leading to extensive damage to infrastructure and agriculture, with a total of 61 reported deaths. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has been instrumental in addressing these challenges.

During a recent event to receive Emergency Medical Teams equipment from the World Health Organization, Permanent Secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu highlighted the significant impact of these cyclones. He noted that these events prompted the formation of the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) in 2019, made possible through support from the World Health Organization and guidance from New Zealand and Australian medical teams.

Dr. Tudravu stated that FEMAT has been crucial in managing local and regional disaster responses, providing assistance during seven cyclones, outbreaks of leptospirosis and typhoid, as well as conducting two surgical outreach programs and coordinating three universal health coverage initiatives.

In 2021, FEMAT facilitated the setup of a 28-bed tent field hospital in Lautoka and adapted the Vodafone Arena to accommodate COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Tudravu expressed gratitude to the World Health Organization for providing FEMAT with the essential kits and equipment needed for their operations.
