The 2024 Fiji Spartan APAC Championship and Trifecta came to a successful conclusion yesterday, featuring demanding 10km super and 5km sprint obstacle races held at Aviva Farms in Sabeto. The stunning venue, surrounded by the picturesque Garden of Sleeping Giant, provided an idyllic backdrop for the events that attracted hundreds of participants.
Racers included both seasoned Spartan competitors from around the globe, first-time entrants, and local teams, all eager to take on the challenges. David Dewar, who completed the 10km Spartan Super, praised the event, stating, “It was an excellent event. The 10km was pretty gruelling but it was great to have the support of so many people along the course. Well done to the organizers, Tourism Fiji, and sponsors for putting on an epic event in such a stunning location.”
Susannah Hodson participated in her first Spartan race alongside a group of friends. Reflecting on her experience, she stated, “This was my first Spartan race and it was a great chance to get the whole family involved. The kids loved the kid’s race, and I found the 5km tough going, but it’s a great sense of achievement at the end.”
However, the event was not without its challenges. Fiji’s champion boxer and ambassador, Winston Hill, faced setbacks due to a hand injury he sustained during a difficult bout in Nadi a few weeks prior. Despite his challenges, Hill still managed to participate in the open division for both the 10km and 5km races, making the best of his situation. “I did bypass some obstacles due to my broken hand but I had fun,” he shared.
Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, expressed excitement over the event, noting that the Spartan Fiji Trifecta began with a 10km night race and drew participants from across the globe. Last year, the championship significantly contributed over FJD$7.8 million to Fiji’s economy, and Hill is optimistic that this year will have an equally positive or greater impact. He emphasized the event’s role in promoting physical fitness, family fun, and showcasing Fiji’s captivating landscapes and adventure opportunities to the world.
This event demonstrates the resilience and community spirit of participants and organizers alike, highlighting the power of sporting events to unite people and boost local economies.
Overall, the Fiji Spartan APAC Championship and Trifecta not only showcased athletic prowess but also illustrated the unifying power of sport against the backdrop of beautiful nature, bringing together participants to celebrate fitness and community.
