Fiji has invoked its rights as a member of the University of the South Pacific Council and has requested a Special Council Meeting, which is set to take place later this month.
In an interview with FijiLive, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro stated that he has reached out to the USP Council Secretariat after discussions with Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad and Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh.
The meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka while Radrodro acted as Prime Minister, resulted in the Secretariat responding with proposed dates for the meeting in September.
Radrodro mentioned that he has not yet met with the two USP Unions but has taken their concerns into account for the forthcoming meeting.
“I hope that good sense will prevail in understanding our current situation. The University serves as a regional institution, and since its headquarters are in Fiji, we recognize that a significant number of its staff are citizens of Fiji. This is why we are exercising our authority to call for the Special Council Meeting,” Radrodro stated.
