George Goundar, a prominent shipping magnate in Fiji, has taken a firm stand against the prevalent drug crisis impacting the country’s maritime sector. During the inauguration of Goundar Shipping Limited’s fresh passenger carrier, the Lady Daya, Goundar, who is the company’s managing director, stated that 18 employees have been terminated over drug-related and alcoholic problems. He expressed this as a demonstration of his dedication to combating the drug menace among his crew and passengers.

Citing the need for urgent action against substance abuse on his vessels, Goundar declared that any crew member found in possession of narcotics would be prohibited from boarding the ship. He further disclosed that his company has been grappling with drug challenges, with both crew members and passengers engaged in substance use and dealings extending to the remote islands.

He criticized the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) for a lack of government intervention despite highlighting these concerns. He hence appealed for an increased and more transparent police involvement on board their vessels. He also regretted that his company could not take more significant independent measures against this issue.

As part of continued efforts to address the drug problem, Goundar Shipping has now mandated monthly drug screens for all crew members. Goundar reinforced his company’s stance of zero tolerance towards drugs aboard their ships.
