The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team recognizes the importance of winning and maintaining possession as they gear up for the Dubai 7s, the inaugural event of the 2024/25 HSBC Sevens World Series. In an interview with FRU Media, head coach Osea Kolinisau emphasized the need for the team to fine-tune their kick-offs and overall strategies.
“We need to get it right,” Kolinisau stated, highlighting a focus on their defensive and attacking plays. The Fijian squad, which has not claimed victory in the last 22 tournaments of the series, faces a challenging Pool C, competing against Spain, their rivals from the USA, and New Zealand.
All competing teams are currently undergoing transitions following this year’s Paris Olympic Games. New Zealand, now under head coach Tomasi Cama, has introduced a revamped squad, as veteran players like Tim Mikkelson, Sam Dickson, and Scott Curry have retired. However, Dickson believes the fresh lineup could make a significant impact. He noted that the incentives for the experienced players to mentor the emerging talents could create a competitive atmosphere in Dubai.
“The competition is fiercer than ever,” Dickson remarked, reflecting on how the dynamics of the game have changed over the years, with fewer large point differentials in matches.
On the American front, new head coach Simon Amor steps in after Mike Friday. With a strong coaching team that includes American sevens icons Ben Pinkelman and Perry Baker, Amor is optimistic about the fresh direction the team is taking. “Dubai becomes the first step for a new group on our journey aiming to win a medal at the LA 2028 Olympics,” he said, noting that the team comprises five debutants.
Spain also poses a challenge, having reached the Cup quarterfinals in several instances. The matches for Fiji will kick off on Saturday against Spain and the USA, followed by a face-off with New Zealand on Sunday.
In summary, as the Dubai 7s approaches, the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team, alongside their rivals, faces an exciting yet challenging opportunity to showcase their skills. The dynamics of team rebuilding in the wake of veteran departures suggest a promising future for rugby sevens as more emerging talents take the stage.
This tournament will not only test the skills and strategies of all teams involved but could also lead to unexpected victories and thrilling matches that captivate rugby fans worldwide.
