Fiji Sets Sail Towards Shipping Hub Transformation

The launch of three significant initiatives at Lautoka port is designed to establish Fiji as a key shipment and cargo hub, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated. He made these remarks last Saturday while inaugurating the projects for Fiji Ports Terminal Ltd in Lautoka.

“These initiatives are crucial for positioning Fiji as a central player in the regional logistics, facilitating cargo movement from Asia and America for further distribution. Today marks a pivotal moment for us,” said Mr. Rabuka. He added that for Fiji, it is vital to manage the increasing shipping traffic coming from both the East and West to ensure effective distribution throughout the islands.

The projects include maintenance dredging over an area of 63,624 square meters to maintain the depth and navigability of Lautoka port. Additionally, two other projects involve the construction of a container yard and a pilot boat named “Louvaju.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that these developments are part of the government’s broader “Transformational Strategic Thrusts” initiative aimed at enhancing critical infrastructure, underscoring the nation’s commitment to sustainable economic growth.
