The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, announced Fiji’s intention to reopen its diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur coinciding with the celebrations of the nation’s 67th National Day and the 61st Malaysia Day.
Ms. Qereqeretabua stated that the reopening aims to bolster bilateral relations and create enhanced trade opportunities between Fiji and Malaysia. “Our High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is re-opening soon,” she confirmed. Although she did not disclose a specific timeline, she emphasized that Kuala Lumpur would serve as a key hub for trade following the reopening.
In her remarks, she extended congratulations to the Malaysian government and its citizens on their national day, recalling the historical ties between the two nations, which date back many years, particularly during Malaysia’s challenging periods.
She acknowledged the phrase “Bula Maleya,” used by the Malaysian High Commissioner, underscoring the enduring partnership between the countries. According to her, the relationship is robust and dynamic, with Fiji eager to learn from Malaysia’s developmental successes.
The Malaysian High Commissioner to Fiji, Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus, highlighted the similarities between Malaysia’s Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka initiative and Fiji’s emphasis on unity, patriotism, and sustainable prosperity. He explained that the Malaysia Madani concept, introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, promotes core values such as sustainability, prosperity, innovation, respect, and compassion, with Jiwa Merdeka signifying patriotic spirit.
Mr. Idrus traced the historical ties between the two nations back to the 1950s during the Malayan Emergency, when 1,600 Fijians exhibited notable bravery, laying a foundation for the enduring bond between Fiji and Malaysia.
He reiterated Malaysia’s openness to global business, including partnerships with Fiji, and noted that Malaysia consistently ranks among Fiji’s top ten trading partners, reflecting strong bilateral trade relations. Mr. Idrus expressed pride in the contributions of companies with significant ties to Malaysia, such as the Carpenters Group, Spirit of Endeavour, and Shangri-La, and reaffirmed support for the growth of these businesses in Fiji.
