Fiji has expressed its willingness to become the official host for the regional policing centres of excellence under the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres are expected to provide essential services, including training, support, research, best practices, and leadership in various policing areas.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement during his keynote address at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event, held in Sagafili Village, Samoa, last week. He stated, “Part and partial of the Pacific Policing Initiative is the establishment of the regional policing centres of excellence.” He further emphasized his satisfaction that Fiji is ready to serve as a host for one of these centres, highlighting the country’s adequate facilities and supporting infrastructure.

The PPI aims to unify policing structures across the Pacific, based on three main pillars: Regional Centres of Excellence, a Deployable Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG), and a Coordination Hub located in Brisbane. Prime Minister Rabuka also mentioned the possibility of enhancing support from Australia for the Black Rock training facility in Nadi, noting its functions extend beyond military training to include police training and disaster relief operations.
