Fiji Sees Surge in Departures and Visitor Arrivals: What’s Driving the Numbers?

In July, a total of 15,223 residents left Fiji, according to data from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS). Out of these departures, 13,488 individuals, representing 88.6%, were for short-term stays of less than three months. Meanwhile, 625 residents, or 4.1%, departed for a period spanning over three months and within a year. Additionally, 1,110 individuals, accounting for 7.3%, were absent for a longer term of one year or more.

The FBoS also reported that provisional numbers for visitor arrivals in July 2024 reached 98,332. Among these visitors, 97,331 arrived by air, while 1,001 came by sea, primarily consisting of seamen on fishing vessels (718) and 283 yacht arrivals.

Of all visitors, 79.9% traveled to Fiji for holiday purposes, 9.9% visited friends or relatives, 1.6% came for business, and 8.6% arrived for other reasons. This figure marks a record for July, reflecting a notable 5.2% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, there was a 6.2% rise from June 2024, which recorded 92,571 visitors. In previous years, visitor arrivals for July stood at 93,483 in 2023 and 78,368 in 2022.
