The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has reported 552 new HIV cases in Fiji from January to June 2024. These cases were documented across all divisions, with 380 occurring in the Central division, 151 in the Western division, 19 in the Northern division, and 2 in the Eastern division.

The total number of new cases in the first half of 2024 represents a 33 percent increase compared to the entire year of 2023. Notably, 73 percent of the new cases involve individuals under the age of 39. The age distribution of the new cases shows that 137, or 24.8 percent, are from the 20 to 24 age group, 128, or 23 percent, from the 25 to 29 age group, and 50 cases, accounting for 9 percent, are in the 15 to 19 age group.

While sexual transmission remains the main route for HIV spread in Fiji, 15 percent, equating to 85 new cases, have been linked to individuals who identified as users of injectable drugs. This marks a notable rise in new diagnoses among this demographic compared to previous years.

Despite the rise in new cases being a significant concern, the Ministry of Health expects this number to grow further as they enhance national screening, testing, and care enrollment efforts. During the same period, 13 deaths were reported among people living with HIV due to HIV-related illnesses. In contrast, there were 82 deaths from such illnesses throughout the entirety of 2023.

The Ministry strongly advises the public, particularly young people, to avoid high-risk behaviors that can lead to HIV transmission, including using injectable drugs and sharing needles, engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners, and participating in chemsex activities.

It is important to emphasize that HIV is not a death sentence. With proper treatment, individuals living with HIV can lead fulfilling lives. The Ministry encourages those at high risk to get tested and understand their HIV status, urging anyone who tests positive to seek treatment promptly and adhere to their healthcare regimen.
