Fiji Seeks New Police Chief: What’s Next?

The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is preparing to announce the vacancy for the position of Commissioner of Police in the near future. Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, stated that the COC is actively working on finding a new leader for the Fiji Police Force.

“The COC will soon be advertising the position. We hope to see many applicants once the advertisement is published, allowing us to appoint a substantive commissioner quickly,” Mr. Tikoduadua commented.

This vacancy follows the resignation of Sitiveni Qiliho, who stepped down while serving a two-year prison term after being suspended on January 27. Consequently, the COC will initiate the process of selecting a new commissioner. Presently, the role is temporarily filled by Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew.

The COC functions as an advisory entity, providing recommendations to the President of Fiji concerning the appointment of significant public roles, including that of the Commissioner of Police. The commission consists of six members, with the Prime Minister serving as chairperson, alongside the Leader of the Opposition and the Attorney-General. The Prime Minister selects two additional members and one is chosen by the Opposition Leader.
