The Constitutional Offices Commission has formally opened applications for the post of Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, issuing a public advertisement that sets a submission deadline of 4.30pm on May 30, 2026. The notice outlines the senior role’s broad statutory powers and operational responsibilities under Section 130(5) of the Constitution and calls for candidates with extensive corrections experience.

According to the advertisement, the Commissioner will have overall responsibility for the organisation, administration, deployment and operational control of the Fiji Corrections Service. The role carries explicit powers over appointments, removals and disciplinary matters for all ranks, members and employees of the service. The Commissioner is also charged with setting, subject to agreement with the responsible Minister, employment conditions, qualifications for appointment, salaries, benefits and allowances, and staffing establishment levels within the limits of the approved parliamentary budget.

The position requires the successful candidate to prepare and implement the Fiji Corrections Service’s strategic plan, annual corporate plan and annual budget. The Commission’s notice emphasises that applicants must be able to demonstrate strategic leadership, integrity and transparency, as well as the ability to manage staff, resources and stakeholder relationships effectively — capabilities seen as essential for steering the service’s operational priorities and compliance with legal and budgetary frameworks.

Applicants must possess extensive and relevant experience within the corrections field, the advertisement states, while a formal degree from a recognised university is described as desirable. Those interested are required to submit a comprehensive curriculum vitae and the names of at least two referees to the Secretary of the Constitutional Offices Commission by the closing time on May 30, 2026.

The Constitution prescribes the appointment process: the Commissioner will be appointed by the President on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission after consultation with the Minister responsible for the Fiji Corrections Service. The Commission said an attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate, though it did not specify salary figures or other package details in the public notice.

This public advertisement marks the latest formal step in filling a constitutionally significant post that oversees Fiji’s corrections institutions. Prospective candidates and stakeholders now have a clear timeframe and a set of criteria to guide applications, with the Commission moving to solicit qualified leadership to manage the service’s strategic and operational responsibilities.
