Fiji Schools Set to Lift with Weightlifting Initiative

Fiji is considering the introduction of weightlifting programs in schools starting next year, according to Fiji Weightlifting president Della Shaw-Elder, who spoke with SUNsports. The initiative is still in its initial stages, and the plan is to launch pilot programs in select schools before expanding further. Elder emphasized the need for careful implementation due to safety concerns associated with strength and conditioning activities.

Elder expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting that a proposal for a high-performance center was submitted to the government in 2019. She mentioned that they received confirmation via email about the location for the center, which is pending official approval.

The establishment of a dedicated weightlifting fitness center is expected to elevate the sport’s profile in Fiji. Elder highlighted the promising future of weightlifting in the country, pointing out that the oldest athlete in the group is 26, with all other athletes younger than him.

At the ongoing competition, Fiji has already secured a youth bronze medal in the women’s 59kg category and the men’s 81kg category. Elder stated that these results will help the team prepare for the Commonwealth Games in 2026, noting India’s strong performance in the event. She encouraged the Indo-Fijian community and others to come out and support the weightlifting initiative. The Fiji weightlifters are set to continue competing for the next two days.
