Educating the youth about the significance of waste management is crucial to tackling Fiji’s environmental challenges. Jane Wong-Niubalavu, a senior administrator at the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), is taking proactive measures to address the waste dilemma in the nation by donating recycling bins to educational institutions. The initiative aims to instill in the next generation the importance of properly sorting and disposing of waste.

According to Ms. Wong, the project is part of a comprehensive Olympic values program, which is funded by Olympic Solidarity. “The goal is to equip students with the knowledge and tools to manage waste effectively,” she stated. Schools received two types of recycling bins: one designated for collecting paper and PET bottles, and another designed for waste that offers tangible rewards for the school.

In detail, filling the first bin allows the school to earn a reward of 25 cents, while the second bin, once full, provides toilet paper for the school’s use. This initiative builds upon an earlier project funded by Olympic Solidarity, which included an Olympians Team Assembly and a mascot program in various schools, including special education institutions in Suva and the western region of Fiji.

The present phase of the project involves returning to these schools to further emphasize the importance of recycling. Notably, partnerships with organizations such as Mission Pacific and Waste Recyclers have been pivotal in establishing the necessary infrastructure and educational support. Mission Pacific has played a significant role in teaching students the importance of accurately sorting their waste.

Initially focusing on recycling PET bottles and paper, there are plans to broaden the program to encompass other recyclable materials, including aluminum cans. “Our objective is to ensure students learn how to sort their rubbish correctly, starting with PET bottles and paper, and understand the recycling process,” said Ms. Wong.

The initiative aims to provide incentives to encourage participation, as many might wonder about the benefits of recycling. By involving the entire school community, the project creates a rewarding experience for all, ensuring that everyone has something to gain while fostering a culture of sustainability.

This endeavor is a hopeful step towards instilling responsible waste management practices in Fiji’s future leaders, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
