Fiji schoolboys head coach Peniona Ranitu is set for his first national assignment today as his team prepares to face the Australian schoolboys in what promises to be a thrilling match at Lawaqa Park. The eagerly awaited clash is scheduled to kick off at 6 pm tonight.
Ranitu, who recently led Lautoka Rugby this season, has been appointed to his first national coaching role due to his impressive leadership and tactical skills demonstrated at the domestic level. This opportunity signifies a significant milestone in his coaching career as he steps onto the international stage to guide the nation’s top schoolboy talent.
“It will be a huge challenge for me, transitioning from domestic competition to my first national job,” Ranitu acknowledged. “However, these boys are very disciplined, and that will be our strength when we take on Australia.”
In preparation for the match, Ranitu has focused on developing a well-rounded team, emphasizing the importance of discipline both on and off the field. With limited time for preparation, he believes the team’s strong work ethic and dedication will be vital against a powerful Australian side recognized for its physical prowess and tactical savvy.
“We have worked hard on maintaining structure and unity, and I am confident that this will help us remain composed during high-pressure moments in the game,” he added. “Australia will be tough, but we are ready for the challenge.”
Ranitu has announced a solid 23-member squad for today’s match. The forward pack features Rupeni Nuinui at loosehead prop, Waisake Vakacere at hooker, and Raymond Navunikaba at tighthead prop. The second-row will consist of Sosiceni Waqa and Saimoni Vaisova, while Isoa Koroinawai, Samuela Tuidraki, and Sireli Nete will make up the loose forward trio.
Leading the backline will be the successful halves pairing from Queen Victoria School’s Deans U18 team, with Meli Waqairadovu as scrumhalf and Anare Tabakaucoro at fly-half. The centres will be Joji Rakaba and Maleli Nauvasi, while Duacake Vulainabuwaha and Nathan Stephens will take on the wing positions, with Josaia Ralulu at fullback.
