The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is looking to create a solid business plan to propel the Flying Fijians toward winning a Rugby World Cup title. During an interview with FijiNikua magazine, the chairman of the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), John Sanday, emphasized the importance of transitioning from limited resources to establishing a robust financial foundation.
Sanday, a member of the national team that reached Fiji’s first World Cup quarterfinal, recalled that their success has historically come from talent, fitness, and dedication. He articulated a clear vision: “Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup.” To achieve this, he believes it is vital to stabilize the FRU’s finances and improve governance while expanding revenue streams.
In this effort, Sanday announced plans to set up board sub-committees aimed at overseeing specific projects, with more details to come in early 2025. Additionally, he highlighted the need for a players’ association, which would represent player interests within the FRU and could include a member on the board.
The FRU is also planning to assess its staffing and structure to ensure alignment with global rugby standards. This strategic approach aims not only to enhance the organization’s capacity but also to elevate Fiji Rugby to tier one status.
This ambition signifies a hopeful step for Fijian rugby as it seeks to harness existing talent and resources for greater success on the world stage. With a comprehensive business strategy and commitment to improving both governance and support for players, Fiji is positioning itself to make a strong competitive impact in future Rugby World Cups.
