The Fiji Water Flying Fijians will not receive bonuses for match victories during their upcoming November tour, a decision confirmed by Peter Mazey, the interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This resolution arose after a player, through the players’ welfare association, inquired about the possibility of bonuses.
Mazey emphasized that the union needs to adhere to its financial capabilities, stating, “We do not agree with it; the union supported this law enough is enough.” He expressed that the FRU had substantial expenses during the Rugby World Cup, which amounted to $11 million, a significant portion of which was allocated to the players.
He noted the importance of playing for the country’s pride rather than personal financial gain, stating, “We all have to live on what we earn and we can’t afford to keep doing this.” Additionally, FRU board member Jenny See-to highlighted that bonuses typically originate from government support, as the union itself lacks the financial resources to provide these incentives.
This decision underscores the financial realities faced by sports organizations, particularly in the context of providing adequate support to players while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
In a positive light, this situation reinforces the sentiment that representing one’s country in sports is a matter of national pride, which can inspire the players to focus on teamwork and the joy of competition, rather than financial motivations. With the right spirit, the Flying Fijians can channel their energy into performing their best on the field for their fans and their nation.
