Fiji Rugby Union Triumphs: Membership Reinstated Amid New Governance Changes

The Fiji Rugby Union has had its membership restored in the World Rugby Council. This decision follows a meeting of the World Rugby Executive Board held in late July, during which they assessed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee.

The report highlighted that the FRU successfully conducted a Special General Meeting, where members unanimously approved a new constitution and governance framework. This is regarded as a significant move towards ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective leadership within Fiji Rugby.

FRU Chairman Peter Mazey expressed gratitude for the support from World Rugby, as well as the commitment demonstrated by their stakeholders. He indicated that the adoption of the new constitution and governance structure reflects the union’s dedication to advancing Fiji Rugby. “This reinstatement is not only a triumph for our Union but for all our players, coaches, and fans who have supported us through this time,” he stated.

Mazey also noted that this reinstatement would enable Fiji Rugby to enhance its relationships within the global rugby community and further its mission to promote the sport in Fiji.

In light of this development, the FRU will nominate a representative to the World Rugby Council, who must be vetted under the World Rugby Integrity Code before assuming their position. World Rugby expressed appreciation to Fiji Oversight Committee members Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong for their efforts in facilitating this positive outcome. The FRU remains dedicated to adhering to the values and standards established by World Rugby.
