Fiji Rugby Union to Review Flying Fijians’ Performance Amid Concerns

Fiji’s rugby head coach, Mick Byrne, is set to present a report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week regarding the team’s recent performances. In a statement to SUNsports, FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu explained that it is standard procedure for the board to evaluate all facets of performance at the conclusion of each campaign.

Byrne has just returned from Australia and will discuss the team’s recent tour with the board. When queried about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ latest performance, Nayacalevu acknowledged the disappointment with the outcome against the All Blacks but noted positive aspects, such as the victory over Georgia and subsequent improvements in their world ranking, which serve as a foundation for future development.

Nayacalevu further mentioned concerns regarding limited access to players, particularly since the match against the Barbarians in Twickenham coincided with the Super Rugby season and occurred outside the World Rugby access window.

He emphasized that all staff members, including Byrne, are governed by key performance indicators (KPIs) outlined in their job descriptions. Any directives will follow the review process once Coach Mick returns to Fiji.

Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has resigned following the recent tour.
