The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) today, ushering in a new era of governance as newly elected board members assumed responsibility. The outgoing Trustees, including Peter Mazey, Jenny Setto, Sikeli Tuinamuana, Alipate Naiorosui, and Mosese Naivalu, successfully navigated the FRU through a significant restructuring phase, emphasizing a renewed commitment to operational integrity and financial stability.
Significant accomplishments during their tenure include the adoption of a new constitution to enhance transparency, securing a seat on the World Rugby Council, and implementing a substantial operational overhaul. These changes have positioned Fiji Rugby as a more influential participant on the global stage and strengthened internal accountability through the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer who reports directly to the Board.
Financially, the FRU recorded a profit of FJD 1.6 million in 2023, a remarkable turnaround from a FJD 1.5 million loss the previous year. Additionally, longstanding debts have been cleared, including repayment of a FJD 2.7 million loan to World Rugby, which lays the groundwork for long-term sustainability.
As the outgoing leadership hands over the reins, they expressed pride in the collaborative efforts that paved the way for these achievements and remain optimistic about the new board’s ability to continue fostering growth in Fiji Rugby. “The passion for rugby in Fiji is unmatched,” remarked Mazey, emphasizing the hard work of players, unions, stakeholders, and critics alike in paving a brighter future.
The newly elected board includes Mosese Naivalu as Legal Director, John Sanday and Tevita Tuiloa as Commercial Directors, Cathy Wong as Women’s Director, and Koli Sewabu and Conway Beg as Rugby Directors. This diverse group is tasked with guiding Fiji Rugby toward enhancing talent development, improving national team performance, and expanding the sport’s presence both domestically and internationally.
As the FRU enters this promising new chapter, all members, including the outgoing Trustees, are devoted to building a strong legacy for future generations of Fijian rugby players and fans.
In summary, the FRU is poised for a vibrant future following significant achievements in governance, finance, and operational structure. With a solid foundation now established, the new board members bring fresh perspectives and leadership to enhance Fiji Rugby’s development moving forward.
