Fiji Rugby Union Scandal: Couple Charged with High-Stakes Fraud

A couple is facing charges in the Suva Magistrates Court for allegedly defrauding the Fiji Rugby Union. Pawan Deo, the former accountant of Fiji Rugby Union, and his wife Subhashni Mudaliar have each been charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining a gain, and obtaining a financial advantage.

The court was informed that Deo, as the sole proprietor of Sports Supplies Limited and the accountant for the Fiji Rugby Union, conspired with his wife to unlawfully obtain $53,788.75 from the organization. The incident reportedly took place in 2022.

It is claimed that they facilitated fraudulent payments to Sports Supplies Limited, resulting in the company receiving $7,291.83, despite being aware that it was not entitled to this amount. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption indicated that the couple appeared in court yesterday and have since been remanded. A bail hearing has been scheduled for today.
