Fiji Rugby Union Scandal: Couple Charged in Alleged $53K Fraud

A couple has faced charges in the Suva Magistrates Court for allegedly defrauding the Fiji Rugby Union. Pawan Deo, a former accountant for the Union, and his wife Subhashni Mudaliar are each charged with conspiracy to defraud, obtaining a financial gain, and obtaining financial advantage.

The court heard that Deo, as the owner of Sports Supplies Limited and the accountant for the Fiji Rugby Union, conspired with his wife to unlawfully acquire $53,788.75 from the organization. The alleged misconduct occurred in 2022, during which they are accused of orchestrating fraudulent payments to SSL, resulting in the company receiving $7,291.83, despite being aware that the firm was not entitled to such funds.

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption reported that the couple appeared in court yesterday and has been remanded. A bail hearing for the case is scheduled for today.
