Fiji Rugby Union Rejoins Global Stage: A New Era Begins!

The Fiji Rugby Union has had its membership restored in the World Rugby Council. This follows a meeting of the World Rugby Executive Board in late July, during which they evaluated a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee.

The report highlighted that the FRU successfully conducted a Special General Meeting, where members unanimously adopted a new constitution and governance structure. This move is considered crucial for promoting transparency, accountability, and effective leadership within Fiji Rugby.

FRU Chairman Peter Mazey expressed gratitude for the support received from World Rugby and the dedication demonstrated by their stakeholders. He emphasized that the new constitution and governance framework reflect their commitment to advancing Fiji Rugby. Mazey noted that this reinstatement is a significant achievement not only for the Union but also for the players, coaches, and fans who remained supportive during challenging times.

He further stated that this reinstatement will enable Fiji Rugby to strengthen its relationships within the global rugby community and continue its efforts to promote the sport in Fiji. Following this development, the FRU will appoint a representative to the World Rugby Council, who must be vetted according to the World Rugby Integrity Code before assuming their position.

World Rugby also expressed appreciation for the contributions of Fiji Oversight Committee members Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong in facilitating the FRU’s successful outcome. The FRU remains committed to upholding the standards and values established by World Rugby.
