The Fiji Rugby Union has been re-admitted to the World Rugby Council after the World Rugby Executive Board’s meeting in late July, during which they reviewed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee. This report highlighted that the FRU successfully conducted a Special General Meeting, where members unanimously approved a new constitution and governance structure. This development is viewed as a significant move towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and leadership within Fiji Rugby.
FRU Chairman Peter Mazey expressed gratitude for the support from World Rugby and the dedication of their stakeholders. He stated, “The adoption of our new constitution and governance framework is a testament to our dedication to moving Fiji Rugby forward. This reinstatement is not just a victory for our Union but for all our players, coaches, and fans who have stood by us during this period.” Mazey also noted that this reinstatement would strengthen Fiji Rugby’s connections within the global rugby community and further its mission to promote the sport in Fiji.
As a result of this reinstatement, the FRU will now put forward a nominee to the World Rugby Council, who must undergo vetting under the World Rugby Integrity Code before assuming their position. World Rugby also extended its appreciation to Fiji Oversight Committee members Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong for their efforts in helping the FRU achieve this successful outcome. The FRU remains dedicated to adhering to the values and standards established by World Rugby.
